LA ‘PERMANENZA’ DELLA FORMA. IL CASO STUDIO DI BUCCINO

Raffaele D’Andria

Abstract

The paper outlines the surveys and restoration works conducted by the Salerno Archaeological Superintendence following the 1980 earthquake in the historic town center of Buccino, the ancient Volcei, in the Salerno province. These surveys were characterized by the method's progressiveness: applied with scientific rigor and non-invasive technical solutions, the method was calibrated for building areas in agreement with private interventions. Thus, the main monuments of the ancient town and the different urban-architectural stages from the 6th-4th centuries BC were highlighted. The whole intervention was carried out with respect for permanences, avoiding alterations to the urban fabric, buildings demolitions, and pursuing the goal of enhancing the urban whole's stratigraphy and its spatialities. Particularly interesting was the digging of the Norman-Angevin Castle area, which documents a continuous use from the 12th to the 20th century, and the emptying of the rocky moat that, filled in over time, separates it from the settlement: thanks to it, the visual link with the underlying landscape – which is the last stage of the complex stratigraphy of the ancient urban center – was made possible.
