Abstract

This paper presents a pilot survey about passengers’ mobility finalized to verify their level of acceptance of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) scenarios. MaaS is an integrated system that considers the mobility needs of users as a central element of the transport service. The pilot survey has been executed in the Messina Strait area (South of Italy), where the two cities of Reggio Calabria and Messina lie. The area has about 1,100,000 inhabitants and the two cities are connected today by means of maritime transport services. The exchanges in terms of passengers between the two cities are more than 20,000 users/day. The results of the survey show empirical evidences about users’ attitude to change their travel habits in presence of MaaS. The attitude to change towards MaaS is more evident for journeys passing through the Strait of Messina that separates the two cities, rather than journeys inside each city. The methods adopted could be extended to the design of a survey for the ex-ante assessment MaaS.
